Wyatt Smith

Class of 2010
School: Peabody College
Major: Human and Organizational Development
Hometown: Reform, AL

Wyatt Smith is a sophomore in Peabody College double majoring in Human and Organizational Development and Economics. He attended Pickens Academy in rural Carrollton, Alabama, where he served as President of the Student Government Association, captain on the varsity football and basketball teams, and valedictorian of his graduating class. In high school, the majority of Wyatt’s service revolved around student government. His work included developing school partnerships with National Guard troops stationed abroad, leading fund drives for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and victims of natural disasters, and establishing volunteer opportunities in his school for students to reach out to disadvantaged children. Wyatt’s proudest accomplishment was the development of a school teen-mentoring and reading program for kindergarten and first-grade aged children in Pickens Academy’s elementary school. He was elected as President of the Alabama Independent School Association State SGA his senior year, and led a statewide fundraising project for victims of Hurricane Katrina that raised several thousand dollars. As an Eagle Scout, Wyatt led a service project to restore an American Legion post in his hometown, volunteered with the local Lion’s Club chapter, and participated in food drives for the homeless.

At Vanderbilt, Wyatt has been an active member of ArtReach and The LOOP, service groups that offer free art lessons and tutoring sessions to inner-city children in Nashville. He serves as Peabody Senator in Vanderbilt Student Government, and enjoys enabling students to pursue their passions through his position as chairman of the VSG Organizational Relations Committee and co-chair of the Student Finance Committee. In the summer of 2007, Wyatt used his Ingram Summer Stipend to serve as a Program Intern with National Student Partnerships, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C. that assists impoverished people on the path to self-sufficiency by providing access to job opportunities, affordable housing, and childcare services. Wyatt feels truly blessed and honored to be an Ingram Scholar, and plans to continue taking advantage of the many exciting opportunities offered by Vanderbilt University and the Nashville community.
