Erin Verbeck

Class of: 2016
Hometown: Rochester, MN
School: College of Arts and Science
Major(s): Anthropology

Erin explored a variety of service opportunities in high school, from walking and training dogs at the local humane society to managing a city-wide fundraiser, “Have a Heart, Give a Heart,” to support the American Heart Association. Though she gained valuable skills from her service (she did not know what patience was until she had to teach a dog how to “heel”) and a deeper understanding of how to serve her community, Erin did not feel drawn to any specific cause. When she arrived to Vanderbilt, she found her service passions by figuratively – and literally – looking within herself.

Erin is studying anthropology with the intent of going into occupational therapy.  Occupational therapy can be described as a profession that helps people with disabilities develop lifestyle habits that aid them in daily tasks.  This can range from helping an elderly person step into their shower to helping a wounded veteran put on a pair of pants.  Erin is interested in working with veterans.  Every man in her near family (going back several generations) has served in the military, and Erin places great value on devoting oneself to his or her country.  She hopes to eventually go into health policy for veterans, as the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system is in dire need of a makeover!

Erin’s service at Vanderbilt is focused on working with at-risk youth in northwest Nashville.  She serves at Preston Taylor Ministries, in which she mentors children, plays music, teaches wellness, and pours her heart into young children.  She is also a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt University Medical Center Occupational Therapy Volunteer Program and Vanderbilt Music Outreach.  Erin is continually inspired by children’s resilience and optimism, and she hopes to retain those qualities outside of her service.  She is extremely thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Ingram Scholarship Program, and looks forward to applying the skills learned to her career at Vanderbilt and beyond.
