Cape Town, South Africa - Policy Research - Disability Inclusion

This summer, I traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to conduct research on barriers to education and employment for people with disabilities. My role as an information gatherer was part of a collaboration with Professor Sharon Shields and her advisee Cathy Arendse, a South African Disability rights advocate who had spent the previous year studying at Vanderbilt University through the State Department’s Humphrey Fellowship Program. In addition, I worked with Nicky’s Drive, a start up non-profit seeking to assist people with physical disabilities obtain vehicle adaptations so that they can drive. Though my project did not take the form I expected, my time in Cape Town provided me with incredible learning experiences and led to the development of exciting ideas and new collaborations.
