Danielle Miller

Class of 2009
Peabody College
Intended Major: Human and Organizational Development
Minor: Environmental Science
Hometown: Louisville, KY

As a high school student, Danielle founded and directed the National Awareness Committee (NAC) in Louisville, KY. This organization was dedicated to serving impoverished, forgotten communities in the United States. In particular, Danielle coordinated fundraising events and letter-writing campaigns that raised over $10,000 to support mission trips to the Rosebud and Pine Rigde Indian Reservations. Danielle organized the collection of books, food, furniture, and clothing for the Lakota Sioux people and orchestrated three summer trips to the badlands of South Dakota. From her experiences on the reservations, developed a deep respect and love for culture, nature, human rights and community development.

Danielle has pursued these interests at Vanderbilt University and through the Ingram Scholars Program. She is specializing in the International Leadership and Development track of the Human and Organizational Development major and is involved in grant-writing process to secure funds for a soup kitchen on Rosebud Reservation. She is also an avid participant in Amnesty International and served as the Publicity Director for the Vanderbilt Chapter. Danielle spearheaded the development of Amnesty In Action, a visual display of human rights violations on campus.

Danielle has also volunteered at Friends of Warner Parks and has been a member of the Sierra Club and Vanderbilt’s BioDiesel Initiative. To develop her fundraising abilities, she has served at the Entertainment Chairman for KickOff CookOff 2006 and 2007, which collectively raised over $26,000 for local charities.

In the summer of 2007 Danielle volunteered in the Visitor Services Division of the National Air and Space Museum. For this Ingram Summer Project, Danielle dedicated her time to interacting with the international visitors of the museum and providing them with information and education. She also learned how to monitor and coordinate the museum’s large volunteer core of over 600 persons, overseeing the distribution of information, use of facilities, scheduling, and volunteer recruitment.
