Imade first became active through her high school’s music program. She played the violin in the Pike Symphony Orchestra and had an opportunity to teach private violin lessons to a second grade student at a nearby middle school. After this experience, Imade acquired a passion for helping others. Through the National Honor Society, Imade was a homework tutor for ninth grade students as well as a volunteer for the Red Cross. Her position with the Red Cross was to teach safety and first aid to middle school students, as well as aid them in disaster planning. The Peers Project was another organization which allowed Imade to peer mentor different teens about healthy relationships, abstinence, and STDs.
Outside of school, Imade was very active in her community. Starting her junior year, she volunteered in a chemistry lab for the VA Hospital as well as in the Pediatrics Emergency Department of St. Vincent’s Hospital, which she continued throughout the summer after high school. She was also a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and has played for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis. Another organization she took part in was Delta Gems, whose primary focus was service to the community and cultural awareness. Some of the activities included delivering Thanksgiving Baskets to people in need in the community, giving a Black History Month Presentation to a church youth group, volunteering at Gleaners Food Bank, and volunteering at a Black Santa convention. The program helped her grow and realize the many different ways one could impact another’s life. Imade’s senior year was also her tenth year in the Christ Church Cathedral Girls Choir, where she caroled for nursing homes and sang in services for the homeless.
At Vanderbilt, Imade hopes to join services for the homeless, to those in foster care or guardian homes, as well as those isolated in juvenile correction facilities. She also hopes to mentor children and young adults. Another interest of hers has always been to console and communicate with other Russian-speaking immigrants and help them with barriers formed as a result of their identities. After undergrad Imade is interested in pursuing an MD/PhD, and is looking to specialize in Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine.
