Jennifer Hirsch

Class of 2009
College of Arts and Science
Major: Interdisciplinary Major in Conflict Resolution
Hometown: Springdale, AR

In 2004, while serving as a U.S. Senate Page, Jennifer implemented a
program to help support soldiers serving in the U.S. military. The program
was called Project SOS: Supporting Our Soldiers and helped to send care
packages to over 200 soldiers overseas. In addition to supporting the
troops, Jennifer was actively involved in different volunteer efforts,
including several service trips to build houses in Rio Bravo, Mexico.

While at Vanderbilt, Jennifer has integrated her studies and service into
one entity by participating in four service-learning courses. Also while at Vanderbilt, Jennifer developed and led a site for Alternative Spring Break (ASB). The site was in the Mississippi Delta and worked with issues of poverty, racism, and community development. Jennifer enjoyed her trip to the delta so much, that she decided to work there during the summer between her sophomore and junior year. She interned for a non-profit bank working on economic and rural development.

Jennifer is a passionate human rights and social justice activist.  Since
her sophomore year, she has served as the co-president of STAND- An
anti-genocide coalition that focuses on human rights, refugees, and
genocide. She helps to raise the level of awareness on campus about Darfur
and other conflicts by organizing educational films, lectures, and events.

Currently Jennifer volunteers with the Sudanese Community Center and the Lost Boys Center in Nashville to help Sudanese refugees acclimate to a new culture in the United States.
