During his high school career, Tyler began his service work with a wide variety of activities. As Senior Class President, he was responsible for organizing different projects focused on fundraising and children's education. He also spent several years volunteering in different branches of a local hospital.
At Vanderbilt, Laura has focused her volunteer work on Nashville’s Hispanic community. During her freshman year, Laura taught science lessons to elementary students through Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science and cooked dinners for families at the Ronald McDonald House through her sorority.
At Vanderbilt, Thomas founded La Escalera de Escalante—a bilingual library and literacy program for Latino children in the Nashville community. The organization operates within a predominantly Hispanic apartment complex, allowing for increased access and improved interface between the community and the organization.
Jeremy is a passionate environmental activist and organizational leader. In high school, Jeremy founded the Student Environmental Outreach Coalition (SEOC), a program to help educate students about environmental issues and to provide environmentally oriented community volunteer activities for students throughout Nashville.
Community service is one of Lucas’s true passions. His most memorable high school experience was being a youth council member for the National Youth Summit, which allowed him to help plan a meeting in Washington, D.C., for students and youth leaders from across the nation.
Scott’s passion for serving started from a young age. At the age of 8, he founded a program called “Take a Treat”, which involved taking puzzles, books, and games to young children in hospitals to cheer them up. After entering this idea in a nation wide contest, he was given a $100,000 grant to implement his idea, as well as the opportunity to be interviewed on “Good Morning America”.
During her four years at Vanderbilt, Grace was committed to learning about the needs of high-poverty communities and using her passion for psychology, sports, and education to serve these communities. Her academic focuses included public policy, international relations, and human psychological development.
In high school, Linzy founded the Myers Park March of Dimes Team, which was the first high school program in the Charlotte area to raise money and awareness for the March of Dimes. To plan fundraisers for the program, she partnered with Brentson Buckner of the NFL Carolina Panthers to raise over $10, 000 and awareness for the March of Dimes.
While in high school, Natalia initiated a project entitled Tali’s Tooth Talk as part of an independent community service project designed to teach basic dental hygiene to elementary school children. She presented her 45 minute program to over 2,000 first through third graders in the span of two years.
In high school, Rachna focused her efforts on tutoring inner-city children at an after school site called the One Room Drop-In School (ORDIS). Every afternoon after school, she and some of her classmates would spend a couple of hours helping the children with their homework and building lasting relationships at the same time.

Throughout high school Alex Leddin was blessed to be presented with numerous volunteer opportunities that directly coincided with her skills and passions. In the fall of her sophomore year, Alex participated in a service project in the inner city of Atlanta. She worked at a center that catered to drug addicts, prostitutes, and the homeless, providing them food, shelter, and hope. During her time there, she worked with children’s programs and gained a new understanding of poverty and the need for quality healthcare.
