Thomas Davis

Class of 2010
School of Engineering
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Hometown: Prospect, KY

Along with many other service activities in high school, Thomas focused the majority of his efforts on the immigrant population. He began his involvement as a peer mentor for refugee children at Catholic Charities, where he taught many children to swim and become comfortable around water. At the beginning of his junior year, he began teaching English as a Second Language at the Oldham County Adult Education Center. Applying his past experiences from living in Mexico, he helped a predominately Mexican student body improve its English skills and prepare for GED classes.

During his freshman year, Thomas began volunteering at Baptist Hospital but later combined his interests in both medicine and the immigrant population by serving as a clinical interpreter at the Siloam Family Health Center. He spent the summer of 2007 volunteering in Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico working on community development and health care issues. In addition to community service, Thomas devotes a lot of his time running Varsity cross country for Vanderbilt.
