In high school Stefan became involved with the Timmy Foundation, a local non-for-profit organization in Indianapolis that focuses on providing necessary housing, education, and medical care in impoverished third world countries. After taking part in a medical service trip to Quito, Ecuador with the Timmy Foundation, Stefan went on to become a member of the foundation's board of directors and helped plan a high school humanitarian trip back to Quito the following summer. Also during his high school career Stefan had the opportunity to work with adults with intellectual disabilities at a group home and often helped out with Special Olympics events.
Since enrolling at Vanderbilt University, Stefan has had the opportunity to continue the work he learned to love in high school by serving on the boards of Vanderbilt’s Best Buddies chapter as well as Vanderbilt’s Global Health Council chapter but has also been able to expand his horizons to other areas of service. Stefan has discovered a joy in working to connect diverse cultures and has been increasingly involved in serving Nashville’s refugee population.
Stefan spent the summer of 2007 in Kampala, Uganda dividing his time between ethnomusicology research and volunteering at an HIV/AIDS clinic. This experience convinced Stefan to stick with his aspirations of becoming a physician, and he hopes to combine all that he has learned outside the classroom with the knowledge from his diverse schedule of courses to be a source for positive change in the world. Stefan is excited and thankful to continue to live and love and connect with others to create a more beautiful reality for all of us. |
