Peabody College
Major: Human and Organizational Development
Hometown: Overland Park, KS
Since she was young, Jessie has actively participated in service of all forms. In high school, she found her passion with inner-city youth through the 4-H program. Jessie was immersed in citizenship, leadership, and community development in 4-H from an early age, which allowed her to directly serve many different types of people.
To combine her love for underprivileged youth with her interest in health and nutrition, Jessie initiated a program called “Culinary Kids,” whose purpose was to provide healthy snacks for kids whose parents were either unavailable or unable to fix healthy meals for them. Every week, Jessie would teach youth how to fix an easy snack, give them the resources to cook it at home, and cover a different topic relating to health and nutrition. In addition to her work with Culinary Kids, Jessie has served on the 2007 National 4-H Conference Planning Committee, and spent many hours as a camp counselor for young teens.
Jessie is thrilled to finally be at Vanderbilt and in the Ingram Program, surrounded by so many service opportunities and populations to serve. She hopes to merge her love of dance with her love of service and continue her work with youth in inner city Nashville. |
