When Accidents Happen: Exposure To Other Infectious Diseases

Exposure to Other Infectious DiseasesPotential exposures include, but not limited to, pertussis (whooping cough), meningococcal infections, measles, varicella (chicken pox), and tuberculosis.

As soon as any case of an infectious disease is suspected, Infection Control (IC) should be notified (936-0725). IC will determine if the case is a confirmed infectious disease and the dates of exposure to the disease.

Managers should be prepared to assist IC to identify all exposed care givers when a case is confirmed.

Each exposed faculty/staff will be evaluated by the Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) for necessary prophylaxis specific to the exposure. When prophylaxis is indicated, the employee will be contacted to initiate treatment.

OHC and IC may require furlough of exposed employees, depending on the disease, to protect patients and coworkers.

Note: OHC is available 24/7 (936-0955) to provide prophylaxis for all confirmed exposures. Do not treat yourself or provide treatment to coworkers.

Occupational exposures must be reported, treated and tracked under the legal and mandated programs for work injuries. OHC follows the guidelines of the CDC for treating exposures. Prophylactic treatment must be authorized by OHC to qualify for Workers Compensation coverage.
