What should my blood pressure reading be?
Normal blood pressure (B/P) is less than 120/80 mm/Hg. Measurement of B/P between 120/139 mm/ Hg systolic (upper number) and 80-89 mm/Hg diastolic (lower number) are considered to be pre-hypertension. ‘Blood pressure measured greater than 140/90 mm/Hg is high blood pressure (also called hypertension.)

How do I know if I have high blood pressure?
Since high B/P seldom causes noticeable symptoms, most people who have high blood pressure are unaware of their condition. The only way to know is to have it measured. An average of two or more readings taken at different times should be used to determine if you have high blood pressure.

What can I do to lower my blood pressure?
• Maintain normal body weight
• Adopt a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products
• Limit dietary sodium
• Get regular exercise equal to a brisk walk for 30 minutes most days of the week
• Moderate or no alcohol intake

I’d like to know what my blood pressure is. Will the clinic check my blood pressure?
Yes, an Occupational Health Clinic nurse will check your blood pressure. For the best use of your time, call 936-0955 and schedule an appointment. Walk in screening may require a wait for an available nurse.

Another option for you is to visit the self check blood pressure station in the Courtyard Café. It is available for use anytime the Courtyard Café seating area is open.

Will this clinic treat my high blood pressure?
The diagnosis and treatment of hypertension should be done by your personal primary care provider. Call that office if you are having problems related to your blood pressure or your medications. If you do not have a Primary care provider, you may call 936-MYMD (936-6963) for assistance to locate a PCP at Vanderbilt.
