HEALTH Plus organizes and/or participates in a number of special events and programs each year. The special events are designed to promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles. Prizes can be earned by participants upon successful completion of the programs. Call 343-8943 for information on upcoming events.

Vanderbilt Weight Management Workshop
HEALTH Plus and the Dayani Center offer a 20-week Weight Management Workshops for adults team-taught by an exercise physiologist, a registered dietitian, and a clinical health psychologist. Each workshop starts with a FREE orientation session aimed at providing an overview of the program and answering questions.

Workshop Fee: $525 for full-time Vanderbilt employees and for Dayani Center members, $795 for all others. Full-time Vanderbilt employees who complete the program may qualify for reimbursement of up to $142.50 of their fee, courtesy of HEALTH Plus. Vanderbilt payroll deduction over 4 months is available. Vanderbilt is the site host for the annual American Heart Association's national walking and fundraising event. It teaches the benefits of a heart-healthy activity and raises money to fund the research and educational programs of the American Heart Association. The walk takes place in more than 1,000 cities. The 2008 Heart Walk is Saturday, September 27th. The celebration begins at 8am and ends at 12 noon.
The walk begins at 10am.
Vanderbilt’s annual walk begins at the corner of 25th Avenue and Children’s Way. It is a 3 mile walk.

My Nine Months Pre-pregnancy Program
There's a lot you can do both before and during pregnancy to help you have a healthy baby. Developed by March of Dimes experts, this Web site gives you the information you need — when you need it.

Babies & You Prenatal Education Program
HEALTH Plus offers this work site prenatal health promotion program to all Vanderbilt employees, spouses, and dependents. The program encourages early and consistent prenatal care and provides monthly educational opportunities on issues relating to perinatal health.
Enrollment is voluntary and free but must be completed during the first trimester of pregnancy. Call (615) 343-8943 to enroll and learn how mothers-to-be can earn a $100 savings bond (taxable) for their new baby. Fathers-to-be and grandparents-to-be are welcome. Door prizes are given at each program.

Corporate Challenge Racing Series
Love to run and have fun? Join the Vanderbilt Corporate Challenge Racing Team!
The corporate challenge racing series (CCRS) is a series of 5k races in which Vanderbilt faculty and staff compete against other organizations. You do not need to be an experienced runner or racer to compete, and everybody is welcome! Visit www.espressodonkey.com/cc for details. The next Corporate Challenge Running Series event, scheduled for September 20, 2008 is the 2008 10th Annual Bob Lundsford Memorial Christie Cookie. This run is a 5K (3.1 miles) held at the Green Hills, YMCA with a start time of 7:30 AM. Join team Vanderbilt run against other mid-state companies in this fun event. All levels of runners welcomed. If you would like to sign up to run with Team Vanderbilt, here is what you need to do:
Register for the event online. Be sure to indicate that you are running for Vanderbilt by entering team # 4 when prompted. Email Brad Awalt by Friday, September 12th by 12:00 PM.

Group Fitness Classes
HEALTH Plus offers a variety of group fitness classes for all levels and interests at our Kensington Garage location and at satellite locations. See class schedule and class descriptions.
Hold the Stuffing
HEALTH Plus challenges you to maintain your weight the week before Thanksgiving through the 2nd week of January, a time when many people typically gain weight. To participate in the event, simply weigh in with HEALTH Plus at any of the Hold The Stuffing stations during the designated week of November. If you maintain your weight* (okay, no more than 2 pounds) through the New Year, you will win a prize! For off-campus departments that are unable to attend weigh-ins we now have a tool kit for you to implement Hold The Stuffing on your own. It's easy and fun for everyone. *if you are trying to gain weight, HEALTH Plus can work your individual goals into this program.
2007 Hold The Stuffing Results: HEALTH Plus completed its 9th successful year of Hold the Stuffing, the annual program to help faculty and staff maintain their weight (within 2 pounds) during the holiday season. A total of 1,458 people weighed in before Thanksgiving and 64% (936) came back for the final weigh in after the new year. Over 55% of participants lost weight during the challenge, with an average weight loss of 3.28 pounds. Each person received resources and motivational support as well as a prize for succeeding.
Intramural
Sports
The intramural program includes over 40 sports. Activities range
from basketball to wrestling. Leagues are available in men's, women's,
and co-recreational divisions. Competitive and recreation divisions are
formed to meet the desired skill or interest level of the participants.
All registration is done through the Office of Campus Recreation.

Pressure Relief Network
HEALTH Plus, together with Occupational Health Clinic and Work/Life Connections, offers this work-site blood pressure educational forum to all full-time eligible Vanderbilt employees, spouses, and dependents. This program offers hour long classes once a month from February through July. The topics include managing blood pressure through medication, an eating plan, exercise and physical activity, handling stress, and setting goals. At each class, blood pressure checks are available.

Tobacco Cessation
Call 936-QUIT to reach the Faculty and Staff Health and Wellness 24/7 Quit line to hear details on smoking cessation options or to speak to someone.
Self-help resources are tools to help you quit on your own.
Some smokers need medication to help them quit smoking. If you've tried to quit before and had problems with nicotine withdrawal or cravings, you might want to consider medication.
Quitting smoking is tough, and many people want some support along the way. Vanderbilt provides support resources such as coaching, counseling and peer support programs.
Give support to staff and colleagues making the transition to a smoke-free life with this downloadable tool-kit.

Summer Programming... More Matters 2007 results: Over 700 people initiated the program. Greater than 13,000 cups were eaten after only five weeks into the program and over 35,000 cups of fruits and veggies were consumed according to the final results!

Walking Wednesdays Meet Lori at the Medical Center North shuttle drop off at 12 noon-12:30 pm, rain or shine (if it rains we walk in the tunnels). Participate in 7 out of 8 weeks and be entered in a drawing for a prize! Two groups will be led by HEALTH Plus each week, one for fast-paced walkers and one for slower-paced walkers.
