Gertrude Casebier Grants for Student Travel
Through the generous bequest of Gertrude Casebier (M.A. in history, 1931), a fund has been established in the History Department to support undergraduate student travel for research purposes.
The History Department will offer 5 travel awards per year, up to $1,000 each, to support undergraduate research projects in archival repositories, presidential libraries, and other research institutions in the United States and abroad.
These awards are intended to defray the costs of research that cannot otherwise be completed by using the library, archival, and interlibrary loan resources of Vanderbilt University and greater Nashville. The awards will cover travel, hotel expenses, meals, and other research_related expenses, up to the maximum stipulated for each grant.
Students may apply for these grants by submitting an application to the History Department’s Undergraduate Studies Committee. The application materials must include:
1. A letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor overseeing the project.
2. A one-page statement describing the nature and significance of the project.
3. A one-page research plan detailing which resources and materials the student intends to consult in the course of the research trip, along with the availability of these materials and a listing of the archival sites in which they are held.
4. A one-page budget for the research trip.
Students may apply as the need arises, and throughout the year, until the funds are used. All Vanderbilt history majors are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to history majors who are researching honors theses in the departmental Honors Program.
Any questions about these grants may be directed to the History Department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies
