Application

Online application

The Vanderbilt History Department offers the PhD degree. Students normally earn the MA following two years of coursework, fulfillment of the research paper requirement, and satisfactory performance on language examinations. The department does not offer a free-standing terminal MA degree.

The application deadline for Fall 2008 admission is January 15, 2008. In order to encourage applicants to utilize the Online Application System, the Graduate School has waived the application fee for electronic submissions.

In conjunction with the on-line application, candidates for admission must provide:

*Statement of Purpose*A minimum of three letters of recommendation (and no more than five).
*College Transcript(s) and Graduate Transcript(s) if applicable.
*Recent GRE examination scores (no older than five years).
GRE codes: Vanderbilt 1871

Note: The Subject Test is not required.

In addition, candidates are asked to send a writing sample, in hard copy, directly to Jane Anderson, Graduate Secretary, Department of History. Undergraduate research papers and theses, especially those that show facility in using original and/or archival materials, are of most use to the admissions committee in making their decisions.

Please contact Jane Anderson ( jane.a.anderson@vanderbilt.edu ) with any questions about the application process. As January 15 th approaches, you may want to e-mail or call her to determine whether all of your credentials have been received and if your application is considered "officially submitted" by the Graduate School.
