Examples of ways in which the department may use discretionary gifts:
To offset operational costs of the slide digitization project in our Visual Resources office.
To support undergraduate travel and research, speakers, events promoting new work by faculty members, etc.
To fund graduate fellowships. The department currently has three full-time 2-year assistantships for Master’s students, plus the Cain Scholarship, which is offered every other year.
To sponsor exhibitions: Opportunities exist for donors to sponsor selected exhibitions at the Fine Arts Gallery.

Specific funds include the following:
The Cooley Award, established in May 1920, is a cash prize given each spring to the graduating senior History of Art major with the highest GPA.

The Frances and John Downing Undergraduate Research Travel Award, established in 2002, supports travel to museums and galleries by juniors and seniors.
