Julian Hillyer presents in Pancrustacea symposium at SICB meeting
Wednesday, January 7, 2015
At the 2015 meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB), Julian Hillyer presented in a symposium titled “Breaking Boundaries for Evolutionary Synthesis: An Interactive and Integrative Symposium Linking Crustacean and Insect Physiology”.
Although hexapods (insects and their flightless relatives) and crustaceans have historically been considered to be different taxonomical groups, recent work has shown that the hexapods comprise a monophyletic group that is nested within a paraphyletic Crustacea. This symposium sought to provide a comparative review of insect and crustacean physiological systems. The talk presented by Dr. Hillyer was titled, “Integrated immune and cardiovascular function in insects”. A link to the symposium page can be found HERE.
Update: This symposium was highlighted in a story published in Science magazine. The story, written by Elizabeth Pennisi, was titled “All in the (bigger) family”.

According to the society website, “SICB fosters research, education, public awareness and understanding of living organisms from molecules and cells to ecology and evolution. SICB encourages interdisciplinary cooperative research that integrates across scales, and new models and methodologies to enhance research and education.“
