1.       HUITAN REBUILDING AFTER EARTHQUAKE NEEDS YOUR HELP (SEE BELOW AND ATTACHMENT)

Can you help us spread the word about this campaign to help Huitán get back on its feet after the earthquake (I've included the longer proposals)?

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that took place November 7, 2012 destroyed more than 100 homes in Huitán, Quetzaltenango; 15 houses were destroyed completely, 1,000 people impacted and the death of one seven year old girl, who was killed by a falling wall. Families are now homeless, without clothes, without food, and little to no income. Please help the town of Huitán to get back on its feet by donating talent, things, treasure or time.

2.       EXCELLENT INTRO FROM GASPAR PERDO GONZALEZ’S BOOK ON 13 BAKTUN (SEE ATTACHMENT, LONG BUT WORTH IT)

3.       SPECIAL ISSUE OF JOURNAL HONORS GSN’ER SANDY DAVIS

First, we are so proud to announce that Tipití: The Journal for the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America just released a tribute issue in his memory. You can view “Special Issue in Honor of Shelton H. Davis: Legacy to Anthropological Advocacy, Development Issues, and Indigenous Peoples’ Movements” here: http://digitalcommons.trinity.edu/tipiti/<http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fdigitalcommons.trinity.edu%2Ftipiti%2F&h=3AQE598O5&s=1>. It is full of great stories, such as when he worked out of a tiny Cambridge office to mobilize international support for a Yanomami Indian land preserve in the Amazon, when he helped stop an attack on a village in the Cakchiquel Mountains, his effort to make the World Bank include indigenous voices and perspectives in their funding decisions, and finally his teaching at Georgetown University to prepare the next generation to continue the struggle. Indeed, as colleague Dr. Robin Wright writes in introducing the issue:

“We have much to learn from Sandy’s career both as an activist in indigenous rights and more broadly, the rights of any citizen vis-à-vis the structures of power in nation-states, corporations and multilateral institutions. Colleagues, ‘companheiros na luta’ (as Sandy would say), friends, and family alike here express their tremendous admiration and appreciation for Sandy’s work."

4.       HELP NEEDED FOR EUROPEAN ANTHROPOLOGY STUDENT STUDYING SPORTS IN GUATEMALA

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Rowan Hordijk, I am 21 year old male Cultural Anthropology student at the University of Utrecht.
In january 2013 I will start my fieldwork expedition in Guatemala (probabley Quetzaltenango). My research topic generally is about: the identity and development of neglected children. For that reason I want to start my research preferably at a sports project who supports, guides and takes care of these children. But especially I want to attend and participate in this organization. My only problem is that I don't have any contacts so far in Guatemala and I was wondering if maybe you can help me with ideas, contacts or anything at all.
I really want to get in touch with an organization, community organization or project who is identified as a trustworthy one and is helping children through an ideology of sport.

Thanks in advance,

Rowan Hordijk

He

Saludos cordiales,

Rowan Hordijk

Dear Guatemalan Network,

I am thrilled to share with you the good news that abUSed: The Postville Raid<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?YourCompanyName/2c059275b8/f8f15aa700/3bde9ea4ee/YourCompanyName/4ba21e90ff/TEST/290307996b> will have its national broadcast premiere on PBS on December 2nd, 2012 as part of America ReFramed<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?YourCompanyName/2c059275b8/f8f15aa700/e365e0b001/YourCompanyName/4ba21e90ff/TEST/b96f0b787b>. This is a new series that “takes an unfiltered look at relevant domestic topics (health care, immigration, the workplace, and politics), tells the many stories of a transforming American culture and its broad diversity through independent, personal and opinionated films.” The team at American Documentary, which produces the award-winning series POV, curates the films. Natasha del Toro who also interviews the filmmakers about the issues in the films and their importance in our national dialogue presents the documentaries.

America ReFramed airs on WORLD Channel a free to the public service, which is broadcast nationwide by your local public media station. Please check your local public media station at this link http://worldcompass.org/episodes/tune-america-reframed-your-tv<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?YourCompanyName/2c059275b8/f8f15aa700/b131e0cd48/YourCompanyName/4ba21e90ff/TEST/906425f969> for broadcasting information of abUSed: The Postville Raid.  <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?YourCompanyName/2c059275b8/f8f15aa700/6607bc483a/YourCompanyName/4ba21e90ff/TEST/ff5bac3c6f>

We have come a long ways thanks to all of you. Your interest, encouragement, and material support have been invaluable. We have been able to present the documentary at over 130 colleagues and universities around the country, at international immigration and labor conferences, in high schools, at faith based communities and community centers. The film has been an official selection of 16 international film festivals and has received three awards, the most recent: “Best Documentary,” at the Cinemaissí Film Festival in Finland.

One of my goals in making this film was to contribute to our national dialogue on immigration and to the creation of a new narrative that recognizes the dignity of immigrants.  At a time when recent political events have heightened our awareness about the importance of immigration, I am very excited that a wider audience around the country will have an opportunity to hear the voices of the immigrant workers and the people from Postville. I believe that there's  a lot  we can learn from them.

Please tune in on December 2nd, and help spread the word!

Muchas gracias!
