VU Fraternity & Sorority Standards

The Standards

Complete your chapter Standards Report HERE

In spring 2005, we participated with 30 universities from across the country in an assessment of the Greek experience. We used the assessment, as well as the National Panhellenic Conference Standards and North-American Interfraternity Conference Standards to create a set of expectations for all Greek organizations.

Minimum standards in a variety of areas show the contributions and developments of each chapter and help us to attain our goal of being the best Greek community in the nation. Each organization is held accountable for meeting the standards. Those chapters that exceed the standards will be recognized for their achievements through the Greek Awards process as well as other means. Those chapters that fall below the standards will be given the opportunity to improve. Those chapters that do not improve and fail to meet the standards may be subject to loss of recognition. We cannot afford to have sub-standard chapters within the Greek community jeopardize the long-term success of fraternities and sororities at Vanderbilt.

The Standards Program evaluates chapters in the following 8 areas:

  • Campus Involvement
  • Chapter Operations
  • Community Service & Philanthropy
  • Education
  • Intellectual Development
  • Leadership
  • Risk Management
  • Values Integration

Meeting the Standards

Vanderbilt University is committed to supporting fraternity and sorority chapters that work diligently to accomplish all 30 standards statements within the 8 areas. However, we realize that chapters will, from time to time, not accomplish every standard statement. It is our expectation that chapters meet at least 27 out of 30 standard statements.

If a group meets 26 or fewer standard statements, the chapter will be placed on Action Plan status for the following year. The chapter leadership will work to develop a formal Action Plan to address all standards that the chapter does not meet. This will provide the chapter an opportunity to demonstrate how it plans to meet the standards and a full year to achieve each standard statement. There will be a mid-semester review with the Greek Life Excellence Review Board in October to gauge the progress of the chapter.

If a group fails to meet 27 or more standards for two consecutive years, the chapter will be placed on Probation status for the following year. A chapter that meets 26 or fewer standard statements for three consecutive years may be suspended for one year.
