Becoming an Advisor

With a Greek community that is over 150 years old, we have over 25,000 living Greek alumni who have graduated from Vanderbilt and gone on to excel in politics, business, education, industry & technology, medicine, law, entertainment and sports. Alumni engagement is absolutely critical to the success of the Greek community at Vanderbilt.

Homecoming 2013 – September 4 – 6, 2013

This year Greek chapters have been given a specific time block on Friday, September 4, 2013 to host alumni events.  We are very excited that we have secured this time block in advance of the class parties for Reunion and hope that you will be able to join us.

As a part of the current 5-year Strategic Plan, the Office of Greek Life has several goals related to Alumni Engagement including:

Goal: All chapters have at least one advisor

Action Items:

  • Follow up with any respondents that expressed an interest in advising on the Alumni Engagement Survey from the OGL staff in conjunction with current advisors, regional volunteers and/or national organization representatives, as appropriate
  • Identify any chapters that need additional advisory support and create recruitment plan with regional or national representatives

Goal: Provide education and training for all advisors

Action Items:

  • Host council specific meetings for advisors at least once per semester
  • Distribute monthly e-news for all advisors with updates, tips and
  • Host annual advisor training for all new advisors regarding policies and expectations from Vanderbilt University

Goal:  Increase involvement and participation in Greek alumni

Action Items:

  • Creation of a bi-annual e-newsletter for all Greek alumni with chapter and community updates
  • Creation of Senior Mentor program, to connect Greek alumni with seniors that have a shared career interest
  • Develop database of Greek alumni that are willing to be engaged with the chapter in some way from the results of the Alumni Engagement Survey
  • Facebook Fan page
  • Order of Omega sponsored alumni panels regarding careers, graduate and professional schools for upper-classmen
  • Creation and implementation of the Past Presidents Society
  • Create a designated block of time during the Homecoming Weekend for Greek alumni to gather for individual chapter events or a combined event
  • Seek engagement from local alumni and advisors to participate in education and training programs within the Greek community (i.e. Alcohol & Social Responsibility Training, Officer Training Sessions, etc.)

Goal: Weekly positive alumni or advisor presence in each chapter

Action Items:

  • Follow up with any respondents that express interest in being involved with the chapter or chapter members on Alumni Engagement Survey
  • Work with chapter Alumni Relations Chairs to identify opportunities for advisors and other alumni to be involved with chapter meetings, programs and activities

In addition, as a part of the Vanderbilt University Fraternity & Sorority Standards all chapters are expected to meet the following areas related to alumni involvement:

  • Chapter has an active alumni/ae advisory board or graduate chapter advisor(s)
  • Chapter hosts at least one event for or with alumni/ae each year. Examples include but are not limited to a Homecoming Tailgate or Founder’s Day Celebration that is publicized and open to all alumni/ae
  • Chapter communicates with chapter alumni/ae via newsletters, emails, websites, or other useful means at least once each semester

Chapters with consistent alumni involvement tend to be our best chapters. If you are interested in getting involved with any of our chapters, please contact Kristin Shorter, Director of Greek Life or your chapter president (add link to Our Chapters  page)
