Marie was born and raised in North Carolina and graduated from Meredith College. She has served churches in North Carolina, Illinois, and Belgium as a youth minister. Marie was the Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Peace College in Raleigh North Carolina, and she was the Registrar at the Mekane Yesus Theological Seminary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she also served on the faculty. She came to Vanderbilt from a position as a church administrator in Franklin, Tennessee, where she has lived for five years with her husband, Mark, her children, Atticus (15) and Claire (13), and her golden retriever, Lily. Marie and her family are members of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she is a deacon. She spends much of her free time doing volunteer work with the Williamson County Democratic Party, for which she is the Recording Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee. Marie likes action/adventure movies and wishes she had more time to travel.
