The history of Regensburg dates back to ancient times, when the Romans built a legion camp in 179 C.E. Its medieval and renaissance Altstadt, one of the best preserved in Germany, is a splendid confusion of narrow streets and picturesque squares, dominated by the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Peter. From the Praetorian Gate, built by the legions of Marcus Aurelius, to the Stone Bridge, dating from the 1130s, the history of Regensburg remains a visible part of everyday life.
Today, 150.000 people make this beautifully located, scenic city a major economic and cultural center in Bavaria. A local repertory theater, excellent first-run and revival cinemas, its own classical music series, operas, and festivals prove Regensburg’s nation-wide acknowledged cultural status. Gourmets will find a variety of clubs, pubs, and restaurants of diverse ethnic cuisines can be found. There arehundreds of kilometers of hiking and biking trails around the city, especially along the Danube. Train rides to Nuremberg, Passau, Munich, Frankfurt, Prague, Vienna and even Budapest are most unforgettable.
