All PhD students in the German Department are strongly encouraged to spend at least one year abroad, for which financial support is provided. Students generally pursue coursework or independent research either at a German university or at a research center, such as the deutsches literaturarchiv marbach, the stiftung weimarer klassik, or the herzog august bibliothek wolfenbüttel.
