Financial Support
Graduate students are supported during their years of study with a combination of funds provided by the Graduate School, the Max Kade Fellowship, and topping-off awards.
Basic support
Each graduate student accepted into the PhD or MA program is awarded an annual base stipend of $15,000 for five years. Tuition and health insurance are covered by the Graduate School.
Max Kade Fellowship
The Max Kade Foundation supports every student with an additional yearly stipend of $7,500 (for five years), which consists of a $2,500 merit-based supplement, a $4000 grant for support during the summer months, and a $1,000 budget to cover research-related expenses, including books, supplemental training, and travel.
Together with the basic support from the Graduate School, this amounts to an annual stipend of $22,500 for all students accepted to the German program.
Topping-off awards
In addition to the annual support of $22,500, topping-off awards are available through the Graduate School and the Provost’s Office. The German Department nominates particularly meritorious students for awards of either $6,000 or $10,000 annually for five years.
Furthermore, eligible students may apply for the Provost’s Fellowship to support underrepresented minority graduate students. The Provost’s Fellowship offers an award of $10,000 annually for five years.
Additional resources
The German Department provides students with year-long stipends for study and/or research abroad. Our Ph.D. students are highly successful in applying for dissertation enhancement grants and scholarships: in recent years, these have included stipends from the Center for the Americas, the DAAD, the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, and the special Vanderbilt/Freie Universität Berlin Exchange Program.
