The Graduate Program in German Literature and Culture at Vanderbilt University prepares a select group of highly qualified students for a career in the field of German. Its purpose is to train graduate students to excel in the profession both as scholars and as teachers.
 
Students with a Ph.D. from the German Department graduate with a comprehensive knowledge of German literature and culture. Furthermore, collaborations with other departments, programs, and a variety of interdisciplinary research centers on Vanderbilt University’s campus challenge students to attain a broad understanding of historical backgrounds, cultural developments, and artistic practices. The program encourages students to develop their individual talents and to discover their intellectual potential under the guidance of a dedicated and distinguished faculty.
 
The program in German at Vanderbilt University offers a wide variety of courses beyond major authors, genres, and periods that include the relationship of literature to philosophy, music, and science; the German cinema and media studies; avant-garde movements; exile studies; the institutionalization of literature; literary theory and criticism; and a range of thematic courses focused on such topics as women & writing, friendship & love, the art of dreaming, concepts of authorship, literature and economy, conceptualizations of nature, contemporary German cinema, intellectual history, etc. See the graduate catalog for more information.
