AmericanAirlines Scholarship

American Airlines has partnered with Vanderbilt's Global Education Office, one of a handful of schools in the nation, to initiate the AA Global Leader Scholarship for Study Abroad Programs. The winner of this prestigious scholarship is awarded round trip travel to any study abroad destination accessible through American's broad network.



The award will be based on academic merit and financial need. Applicants should have a minimum cumulative grade point average of a B (3.0).

Fisk - Vanderbilt Scholarship

Fisk University and Vanderbilt University have partnered to present the Fisk-Vanderbilt Study Abroad Consortium Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year. The scholarship program, funded through a grant from the IFSA Foundation, aims to encourage diversity among students participating in study abroad experiences.

The Vanderbilt scholarships are available to undergraduates in Vanderbilt-approved semester or full academic year study abroad programs only and not applicable to short-term, summer or Maymester programs.

SECAC Scholarship - Belfast, Northern Ireland

 

Vanderbilt is offering a new study abroad scholarship through the SEC Academic Consortium (SECAC) to Belfast, Northern Ireland. One student will be chosen to study and engage in a community service project at Queen's University during the spring of 2009. The scholarship is worth $8,500. Requirements, deadlines, and additional information can be found on the attached forms.

Bridging Scholarship

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 20 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Spring 2008. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.



Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends of $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded 775 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Most recently, 79 students from colleges and universities in 36 states received scholarships for study in 

Japan beginning in the Fall 2007 semester.



The deadline for applications is October 5, 2007. Applicants will be notified of the results by November 20. Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. The scholarships are administered by the Association of Teachers of Japanese.



Spring 2008 programs are those beginning between January and April 2008 and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning in Fall 2008 or for the 2009-2009 academic year should apply in April 2008 for the Fall 2008 scholarships.

Gilman Scholarship

The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.



820 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at 2-year or 4-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.



Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 25 Critical Need Language Supplements will be offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Critical Need Languages include:

  • Arabic (all dialects)

  • Chinese (all dialects)

  • Turkic (Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgz, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek)

  • Persian (Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, Pashto, Tajiki

  • Indic (Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sinhala, Bengali, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Sindhi)

  • Korean

  • Russian
