Vanderbilt-In-Germany, Regensberg

The Vanderbilt-In-Germany program offers students the opportunity to spend an academic year (September-July) or spring semester (March-July) abroad. Students enroll directly in the University of Regensburg and are accorded full academic privileges, including library and computer facility access. Offered in collaboration with Wesleyan University and Wheaton College, the program includes an intensive German course.   Registration is facilitated by an American faculty member who serves as resident director and is available to students throughout their stay abroad.

The establishment of a university in Regensburg in 1967 was a greatly anticipated reply to the century old proposition made to the Pope by Duke Albrecht IV. of Bavaria in 1487. 12 schools of studies, more than 4200 academic staff, and a library of 3.15 million books provide an exceptional assemblage of resources.  The current Pope, Benedict XVI is one of many famous professors who taught at the University of Regensburg.

student life

In addition to activities organized as part of the Vanderbilt in Germany Program, there are many events sponsored by the Universität and by the city of Regensburg. The Uni has a number of parties, and there are many festivals in Regensburg during the year. 

There are many opportunities to practice your language skills while meeting German students.  You can also get involved in an English-German Sprachtandem to meet German students interested in practicing their German while you practice your German.  The Auslandsamt office at the University of Regensburg offers Kaffeestunden for foreign students twice a week as well as several excursions during both semesters. These are great opportunities on which some students met their closest German-speaking friends of the semester.

housing

Students live either on-campus or in the Altstadt. As this arrangement is arbitrary, your living situation is determined prior to your arrival in Germany. Previous students have noted that there are advantages to living in either place. Altstadt rooms provide the student with the opportunity to live in a bustling old town and most also have internet connections.  You may take the bus to get to campus-this ride lasts anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the time of day. Students make their own arrangements for meals. The dormitories have cooking facilities, and the university cafeteria offers inexpensive meals.

location

An ancient city with a modern outlook, Regensburg is an important East Bavarian commercial and industrial center of 130,000 people. The city lies at the northernmost point of the Danube. The area has one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in all of Germany, as well as many significant works of medieval art.
