student life

Despite its large size, Leeds has a welcoming, friendly feel, thanks to its strong departmental traditions and extremely active Student Union. The Leeds Student Union is one of the biggest and best in the country, and it organizes a steady stream of theatre and concerts, from rock and jazz to opera.

To really submerge yourself into campus life, join one of the more than fifty sports clubs or 150 cultural or social societies. The campus is self-contained, with lots of bars and places to eat, as well as amenities such as a supermarket and a travel agent. The city of Leeds has plenty of excellent nightlife and entertainment and is just a ten-minute walk from the campus.

housing

Students are housed in either a single or double room in either a residence hall or a university flat.  While some of the halls are located on campus, many of the halls and all of the university flats are a few miles from campus and are linked by a local bus.  All residence halls require students to purchase a meal plan.  All halls have a common room, a dining room, laundry facilities, and a recreational area.  The university flats, however, do not offer meals plans, nor do they have recreational facilities.  The program fee will cover your housing while classes are in session, but they do not cover the mandatory meal plans in the residence halls.  Also, the cost of transportation to and from classes is your responsibility.  Regardless of your housing placement, you’ll be integrated with other Leeds students.

location

Capital city of the Yorkshire region, Leeds is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country as its population has blossomed to 750,000. This city has undergone a renaissance in recent years, and you'll find beautiful parks and green spaces complementing the many Victorian buildings. As befits an important commercial center, the shopping is great. Leeds boasts symphony and chamber concerts and the famous Leeds International Pianoforte Competition every three years.

The nightlife in Leeds is great; the city is known as having the best club scene in England. Leeds also takes its sports very seriously, being the home of the Leeds United Football team and the Leeds international swimming pool, which is just a ten-minute walk from the university.

Leeds is a great home base for traveling Yorkshire and the famous Yorkshire Moors. Take in some of the best scenery in the country while walking or hiking. Trains leave every thirty minutes for the two-hour trip to London.
