Auckland, New Zealand - University of Auckland
at-a-glance:
For those looking for easy access to outdoor adventure and gorgeous beaches, the University of Auckland may be an ideal location. The university is an excellent home base for exploring surrounding parklands, natural phenomena of the North Islands, or just downtown Auckland for a night out. Students will have little trouble getting to know New Zealanders when they live amongst them in their well furnished flats and interact through numerous university events.
academics

You may enroll for the Full New Zealand academic year (February through November), the US academic year (July through July), or a single semester. Whatever your enrollment, you are required to take a regular full-time program of undergraduate study. This consists of four courses per semester. The university prohibits study abroad students from enrolling in a single semester of a year long course. Most courses are organized on semester teaching plan, though some introductory level courses run for the full academic year, February through mid November.
If you meet the prerequisites and do not have any scheduling conflicts, you can choose any combination of undergraduate courses. Your work is assessed for final letter grades according to regular departmental standards, which include final examinations at the end of each semester.

location

The “City of Sails” is a large and cosmopolitan city nestled between two harbors. This North Island city of 1.3 million enjoys a mostly tropical climate, with high rainfall and a temperature dip during the winter. A vibrant arts scene enriches the city with theatre, music and art. Auckland is home to many Kiwi bands, which helps make its nightlife among the best in the country.
Before being settled by European colonists, Auckland was an important place for Maori intertribal relations; the remnants of Maori villages are still visible on the volcanic cones that dot the area. Today, nearly one third of New Zealand’s population lives in Auckland, and immigrants have added their cultures to the diverse flavors of the city. In addition to its Maori population, Auckland is home to people from Europe and Asia as well as a large Polynesian community.
The nearby waters, including two harbors and several gorgeous beaches, are perfect for waterskiing, sea kayaking, and sailing. The Piha black sand surfing beaches featured in the movie The Piano are less than an hour away.
Auckland offers easy access to outdoor adventure, including visits to the geyser and mud pools of Rotorua, located halfway between Auckland and Wellington. More than 37,000 acres of parkland are within a comfortable distance of the city. Auckland is also a great home base for exploring the Northland and Bay of Island areas.
