The University of Glasgow dates from the middle of the fifteenth century, a
time of critical change in Europe. Modelled on the University of Bologna, Glasgow was, and has remained, a University in the great European tradition. Today, the University of Glasgow is one of the UK's leading universities with an international reputation for its research and teaching and an important role in the cultural and commercial life of the country. The University is a member of the Russell Group of major research-led universities and a founder member of Universitas 21, an international grouping of universities dedicated to setting world-wide standards for higher education. The University has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching and it attaches great importance to ensuring that students receive a high quality learning experience.
The nightlife in Glasgow is among the best in the UK. Pubs, clubs, bars and discos offer and ever-changing series of entertainment options. Glasgow is second to none in shopping, and athletic facilities are available for everything from golf and tennis to ice skating, skiing and moutaineering.

Students study in one of ten faculties: Arts; Biomedical & Life Sciences; Information & Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics; Physical Sciences; Medicine; Social Sciences; Engineering; Law & Financial Studies; Veterinary Medicine; and Education. The faculties are made up of approximately 100 academic departments and in Arts, Social Sciences and the Science faculties in particular, students can choose from a wide range of combinations of subjects, sometimes making their selections from more than one faculty. You may study for the full academic year, the fall term, or the two-spring-term program. If you meet the prerequisites, you can choose any combination of courses you like.

student life
There are almost 16,000 undergraduate and 4,000 postgraduate students at the University, half of whom come from the greater Glasgow area. Nevertheless, the student population is diverse and drawn from more than 80 countries worldwide. Female students outnumber male students 57:43. The University has four student organisations. It has two student unions, Queen Margaret Union and Glasgow University Union, the Students' Representative Council which represents the students in matters which affect their interests, and Glasgow University Sports Association which represents the views of all students involved in sports at the University. The University's Sport & Recreation Service operates the Stevenson Building and the Garscube Sports Complex, providing state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor sport and recreation facilities. Moreover, according to a survey by the internet search engine Yell.com, students at Glasgow enjoy a better social life than undergraduates in the rest of Scotland,. The poll, which ranked Glasgow fifth overall in the UK, found that the city offered the most student lifestyle facilities per head of population in Scotland.

Around 3,500 students live in university residential accommodation. Accommodation choices include catered halls of residence, self-catering student apartments and flats. Murano Street Student Village is the largest residence and houses 1,150 students. A new self-catered en-suite residence accommodating 400 students was built on the site of the old Queen Margaret Hall and opened in October 2002. IFSA-Butler students are guaranteed university housing while classes are in session.

Glasgow offers a great deal. If you like art, history, architecture, music, sports or shopping, you’ll find plenty to interest you. Glasgow boasts a medieval cathedral, an exquisite Georgian square and the finest collection of Victorian civic architecture remaining in the United Kingdom. The West End is the city’s busy, stylish area. At its heart is the University. The area provides all kinds of interesting shops, from ethnic art and food to bars, restaurants, delicatessens and student coffee bars. Overlooking the University is Kelvingrove Park, which in turn is the setting for the impressive Kelvingrove Museum & Art Gallery, world renowned for the quality of its international art collection. Thanks to its location near the west coast, Glasgow is a wonderful place to start when exploring the rest of the country. Just outside the city are gorgeous areas for camping, hiking and backpacking.
