Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics, General Counsel and Secretary
of the University; Professor of Law.
Office: Mr. Williams' office is located
in 305 Kirkland Hall on the Vanderbilt campus.
Mr. Williams is currently serving as Vice Chancellor for University
Affairs and Athletics, General Counsel and University Secretary at The Vanderbilt University
and Medical Center. Mr. Williams is a tenured full professor at the Vanderbilt School
of Law, where he teaches Tax Law, Sports Law, and Law and Education. In addition, he teaches a course
on Law and Higher Education at Vanderbilt's Peabody College.
Mr. Williams serves as one of the Vice Chancellors at Vanderbilt University where he
oversees Student Athletics, the thirteen-member General Counsel Office, the Office of
Risk Management, the University's Compliance and Conflict of Interest functions and the operations of the University's Board of Trust.
Mr. Williams is a member of the State Bars of Tennessee, and
Michigan, as well as the District of Columbia Bar. He is an
active member of the American Corporate Counsel Association (ACCA)
and the American Bar Association (ABA). He is a member of the
National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) Board.
Mr. Williams is a member of the ABA's Bar Admissions Committee and has
served as a member of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions
Standards Review Committee and the ABA's Standing Committee on Public Education.
As a member of ABA's Section of Business Law, Mr. Williams has
served as Co-Chair of the Corporate Counsel Committee. He also
has served on a number of ABA Accreditation site visits of Law
Schools and has completed a three-year term for the Membership
Review Committee of the American Association of Law Schools (AALS).
Mr. Williams is currently serving his second three-year term as a
member of the Nashville Branch of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Board,
and his second one-year term as Chair. Mr. Williams is serving as a
member of the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee and the NCAA General
Counsel Advisory Board.
Mr. Williams is active in the Nashville community, serving as Treasurer
and member of the Nashville Symphony Board of Directors as well as Chair
of its Finance Committee. He serves as Treasurer and member of the
Nashville Public Television Board and is Chair of its Finance Committee.
In addition to serving as a board member for many other non-profit organizations
in the community, Mr. Williams recently served as a member and Chair of
the School Funding Task Force for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools,
and currently serves on the Mayor's Procurement Standards Board.
Mr. Williams has written, lectured and participated in many seminars
on topics of tax law, sports law, law and education and legal history.
He has taught at the Law Schools of the University of Detroit, Capital University,
The Ohio State University and Vanderbilt University. He directed
The Ohio State University Law Program in Oxford, England in 1992 and 1995.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Williams received a Bachelor of Science
(Social Science) and Master of Arts (Education) from Northern Michigan University;
a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University
of Detroit; and an LL.M. (Taxation) from New York University. Mr. Williams came
to Vanderbilt and Nashville in August 2000, where he lives with his wife, Gail,
who is Associate Director of Community Relations for Vanderbilt University;
their children, Samantha--a student at Brown University and Nicholas--a student
at USN; and a black Lab, named Chewy.
