Overview
The Office of General Counsel provides legal services
to Vanderbilt University Medical Center , including the Vanderbilt
University Hospital, the Vanderbilt Medical Group, The Vanderbilt
Clinic, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Medical Staff,
the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, the Vanderbilt University
School of Nursing and Vanderbilt Home Care . The services provided
by the Office of General Counsel cover a comprehensive array of
the legal issues facing today's health care provider: licensure,
scope of practice, medical staff and housestaff related matters,
accreditation and credentialing, patient care, litigation management,
acquisitions and divestitures of medical enterprises, medical records,
managed care contracting, employment issues, medical staff peer
review, contracting issues, corporate governance and conflicts of
interest issues, research and grant compliance, and regulatory compliance
involving federal and state statutes and regulations including Title
XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act, HIPAA, EMTALA, and Stark
II and the Anti-Kickback Statute. The Office works closely with
the Risk and Insurance Management on numerous issues as well. With
statutes and regulations governing health care becoming more complex
every day, health care providers face tremendous pressure to understand
these regulations while providing optimal patient care. The Office
of General Counsel seeks to assist Vanderbilt University Medical
Center in this vital mission.
