MINORS in ITALIAN STUDIES and ITALIAN

 

Students may choose to minor in Italian Studies or Italian.  Both minors require a minimum of 18 hours as outlined below. 

All students interested in Italian culture, art, and civilization are encouraged to onsider studying at one of the direct-credit programs administered by CET for Vanderbilt in Italy. You may take a "virtual trip" to Florence by visiting the official site (in Italian) or a site designed for tourists(in English).

Students who spend a semester at Vanderbilt in Italy in either Florence or Siena can choose to fulfill the requirements for both minors. Contact Dr. Tracy Barrett, Acting Director of Undergraduate Studies in Italian (tracy.barrett@vanderbilt.edu), Director of the Italian Language Program, for appropriate credit. 


MINOR IN ITALIAN STUDIES  18-hour minimum at 201-level and above

A. Required courses:
  • 201 - Grammar and Composition
  • 220 - Introduction to Italian Literature
  • 230 - Italian Civilization
B. One of the following courses:
  • HIST 232 - History of Modern Europe OR
  • EUS 201 - 20th Century Europe

C.  Two courses from the following list:

CLT 224, Dante's Divine Comedy; AH 218, Italian Renaissance Art to 1500; AH 219, Italian Renaissance Art after 1500; HIST 214, Europe in the Age of the Renaissance; HIST 232, History of Modern Italy; HIST 233, Medieval and Renaissance Italy, 1000-1700; ITA 231, Readings from Dante's Divina Commedia; ITA 232, Literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance; ITA 233, The Literature of the Barocco, Illuminismo, and Romanticismo; ITA 235, The Literature of the Novecento; ITA 239, Topics in Contemporary Italian Civilization; ITA 240, Modern Italian Cinema; MUS 243, Music of the Baroque and Classic Eras; MUS 244, Music of the Romantic and Modern Eras; MUS 247, Opera; and any content course (i.e., not language) taken at Vanderbilt-in-Italy, with departmental approval (see Professor Barrett).


MINOR IN ITALIAN 18-hour minimum at 201and above

A. Required courses:
  • 201 - Grammar and Composition
  • 214 - Spoken Italian
  • 220 - Introduction to Italian Literature
B. Three courses from the 200-level courses, except 289. Up to six hours of 294 or 295 may count toward the minor with prior departmental approval.
