Financial Aid

The Vanderbilt Graduate School and the Department of French & Italian offer a number of stipends and scholarships.
Normally, financial awards are available only to students entering in the fall semester.

The University Fellowship is usually given to the first-year student as a full scholarship involving no departmental duties. Students who enter with the B.A. hold this award for the first year. This award and the Teaching Assistantship carry a stipend plus tuition waiver and health insurance.

The Graduate Teaching Assistantship is given to students who have completed the M.A. elsewhere or have done a full year of graduate course work at Vanderbilt by the beginning date of the award. T.A.'s usually teach one section of elementary or intermediate French each semester for four years.

The Harold Stirling Vanderbilt Scholarship
is a four-year "topping-up" stipend in addition to one of the awards mentioned above. This award is given to outstanding students entering the doctoral program. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt awards are competitive among applicants to all graduate programs in the University.

Graduate Select Scholars in Arts and Science
receive a four-year stipend in addition to the basic award. Applicants compete with those for all graduate programs in the College of Arts & Science.

The Dean's Graduate Fellowship
is a four-year complete scholarship, plus tuition, health insurance, and fees, for African American graduate students who intend to teach at the college or university level. Dean's Graduate Fellows are expected to teach two classes, normally during their third year.

The Claude and Vincenette Pichois Scholarship
is available to assist students in French with expenses related to their studies at Vanderbilt. This is award that can include tuition assistance or assistance for travel for research purposes. A committee of the Department makes the award, depending upon the needs of the student body in any particular year.
