University officials monitoring flooding; Provost cancels exams but gives faculty discretion in administering tests

Some residence halls on the Vanderbilt campus are experiencing minor flooding as a result of the ongoing rains, but the damage has been limited to property. Students in the affected residence halls are being moved to dry locations.

University officials, who are in contact with campus and local emergency officials, are closely monitoring the storms that have caused the flooding.

In regard to exams that are scheduled for Monday, May 3, Provost Richard McCarty has cancelled exams overall, but sent an e-mail message to faculty saying, “If a given faculty member and his or her students can go forward with the exam as scheduled, I trust them to make that decision. However, my guiding principle is that no student should be disadvantaged given the events of the past two days.”

Students should check with faculty members regarding exam schedules.

For those exams that are cancelled, McCarty asked faculty members to “work with their students to schedule an alternate time or times to administer their exams, including extending the exam period by one day.

He noted, “Some of our students have been displaced from their dormitory rooms because of water damage and many of our faculty and staff are dealing with damage to their homes or live in areas threatened by rising waters from nearby streams and rivers.”

Vandy Vans will not be in operation tonight. At this point, emergency officials are urging everyone to stay in place unless they are threatened by rising water. If anyone on campus feels they are in danger, call Vanderbilt University Police Department’s dispatcher at 615-322-2745.
