Vanderbilt is a rich university. Why should we be asked to contribute to it? We already offer it our talents and efforts, our time and our energy. Shouldn't that be enough?
There are many reasons to give, even if the gift is modest. We may want to support the work of our friends and colleagues. We may wish to honor someone who made an important difference in our lives. We may intend to affirm a unity of purpose with our growing, dynamic community. We may be committed to doing everything we reasonably can to make the place where we work better.
It is true that Vanderbilt University attracts some large donors. But those donors look at us as they measure the loyalty this institution commands. They know that a community can flourish only if it is able to evoke the devoted support of its members. There is no better measure of such commitment than the readiness to offer emotional and financial support.
I ask you, therefore, to demonstrate your belief in the future of Vanderbilt by making a gift dedicated to the purpose or unit of your choice. It really doesn't matter which cause or activity you choose to support; everything we do here is important, and everything contributes to the growing excellence and reputation of our university.
Please join me in using this opportunity to honor the school, center, department, program or fund of your choice with a tax-deductible gift to the Faculty-Staff Campaign. Your gift has both symbolic and material significance to all of us.
