“The Russian/Georgian Conflict and its Implications for European Security.”
Panel Moderated by MKC Associate Director, Florence Faucher-King and included local Russian/Eastern European experts from History, Political Science, and Russian. 200 persons from Vanderbilt and the Nashville community in attendance. The EU "Getting to Know Europe" grant application was announced at this event.

“Current Foreign Policy Challenges Facing Europe and the United States: Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia.”
Sponsored by the Nashville Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany and Nashville Council on Foreign Relations in collaboration with he MKC.This dinner lecture attracted 35 persons from the Nashville metropolitan area. Mr. Douglas Berry, Presdient of the Warbug Chapter, is a partner on the EU grant.

EU Project launch.
Attended by a diverse audience of ca.120 persons. Consulted with French and European Studies students and met with representatives of the media, Nashville Mayor’s Office, Tennessee Governor’s Office, Nissan Corporation, and Nashville Chamber of Commerce.

Hosted by the Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany in collaboration with the MKC. The presentation was delivered to a largely non-academic audience.

Klaus Scharioth, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States

“The Transatlantic Agenda: A German Perspective”
An informal dinner was held on January 8th; attended by the Director of the Max Kade Center, Doug Berry of American Council on Germany, and Lutz Görgens, the German Consulate General from Atlanta. On January 9, Provost Richard McCarty hosted a breakfast information session for dignitaries at Vanderbilt, the editor of The Tennessean, Mayor Karl Dean of Nashville, and representatives from the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, the Nashville Committee on Foreign Relations, and the Nashville Health Care Council. Ambassador Scharioth also delivered a public lecture on transatlantic relations to a large and diverse audience (200) drawn from the Vanderbilt and wider Middle Tennessee communities. Accompanied by German Consul General Lutz Görgens from Atlanta, Honorary Tennessee German Consul Doug Berry, and John McCarthy, Dr. Scharioth concluded his visit with a personal, private meeting with Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen at the State Capitol.

Sociologist Gerrit B. M. Dielissen, EU Scholar in Residence from Utrecht University

Professor Dielissen consulted widely with faculty and students at Vanderbilt and gave several lectures in classes on topics related to our grant. During his stay he reached a wide audience of 400+.

January 12-14, 2009
Professor Tanel Kerikmäe, Jean Monet Professor and Dean of the Law School
Professor Kasper, Audentes University, Tallinn, Estonia

The purpose of their trip was to explore the possibility of future collaboration with Vanderbilt and with the Max Kade Center on issues related to Baltic Security (one of our research foci). Prof. Kerikmäe delivered a had them address human rights issues in the EU. Prof. Kerikmäe reached a total audience of ca. 60.

“A Counter-Narrative: Islam and the Making of the First Europe.”
An audience of ca. 400 from a wide spectrum were in attendance. Part of the Chancellor's Lecture Series. A reception preceded the lecture.

Edward F. Fischer, Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies and member of the MKC Advisory Committee

“Markets, Moralities, and Community.”
An examination of the tension between narrowly defined individual self-interest and the common goods that define "community." Calling on fieldwork among Maya farmers in Guatemala and German supermarket shoppers in Hanover, Prof. Fischer showed how culturally informed moral values and political-economic institutions condition the way individuals define and pursue their interests. This led to a discussion of the role of competition versus cooperation, the nature of self-interests, and the ways that different sorts of capitalism arise from (and in turn produce) different sorts of moral communities. The public lecture drew an overflow crowd to the lecture room (35). Prof. Fischer is a member of the MKC Advisory Committee and acknowledged the EU grant initiative.

The MKC partnered with the American Council on Germany to host US Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe in March 2009. We organized a dinner/lecture for 30 persons, most non-University guests.

"Polish, European, and Transatlantic Relations: The Security Question"
The MKC partnered with the American Council on Germany in hosting a public lecture. The dinner/lecture was attended by 25. Mr. Mutlu’s presentation was preceded by comments by Prof. John McCarthy on the EU grant and by remarks on diversity by EU Scholar in Residence Gerrit Dielissen.
