The ESSSS Cuba Collection contains ecclesiastical documents from San Carlos de Matanzas, Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje, Iglesia de Jesús, María y José, Nuestra Señora de Regla, Espiritu Santo, Sagrado Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana, Santo Angél Custodio, Arzobispado de La Habana, and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Guanabacoa. This portion of the ESSSS project was made possible by an NEH grant in 2003 (Jane Landers, Mariza de Carvalho Soares and Paul E. Lovejoy) and a British Library Endangered Archives grant in 2006 (Oscar Grandio Moraguez).
This expansive collection contains documents from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. These materials are unique and their condition perilous. Most of the collections are about to disappear, due to the extremely bad conditions in which they are deposited.
In this section of the website, you will find information on the development of the Cuba project and the documents themselves as they become available. As researchers have already begun to use these documents, they have provided transcriptions which are are also available here.
