INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

The Vanderbilt English Department offers the following degrees:

Ph. D. in English Literature 
M. A.*

M. A. T.
M. F. A. in Creative Writing 

*Students normally earn the M. A. degree after the first year of graduate study at Vanderbilt.  On the Online Application, please indicate "Ph.D." as the Degree Sought.


The application deadline for Fall 2008 admission is January 15, 2008.   In order to encourage candidates to use the Online Application System,  Vanderbilt’s Graduate School will waive the application fee for electronic submissions.


Critical components of the completed electronic application for the Ph.D. Program include:
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Writing Sample (maximum length: 25 pages) -- no creative writing
  • Three Letters of Recommendation  (up to five letters permitted)
  • College Transcript(s)
  • GRE General Test Scores  (no older than five years)*

                                                        English Department -- 2501

NOTE:  The GRE Subject Test is no longer required by the English Department.
