VU ELC Faculty and Staff

Susan Barone, Director of the English Language Center (ELC). She received an M.A. in Intercultural Studies from Wheaton College and is currently a doctoral candidate in Applied Linguistics and Narrative Medicine. Since joining the ELC in 1991, she has been instrumental in creating and developing special programs in the Vanderbilt University schools of Engineering, Law, Nursing, and Medicine, and the Owen Graduate School of Management. Professional interests include needs analysis and program design and medical discourse. Susan presents at international conferences, and her publications include articles, several book chapters, and a textbook, American Legal English, which came out in Fall 2007. 

Lee Martin, Assistant Director of the English Language Center. He received an MA in Linguistics (TESOL) from the University of Surrey (UK) and a BJ (Journalism) from Carleton University (Canada). Lee became Coordinator of the Pre-EAP at Vanderbilt in 1978. With a background in broadcasting and foreign languages, his professional interests include pronunciation/accent reduction, pedagogical grammar, and classroom teaching, as well as program administration.

Nancy Calonge, Language Teaching Specialist. Nancy received her B.A. from Marymount College in Spanish and her M.Ed. from the University of Hartford in bilingual/bicultural education. Before coming to the ELC, she taught ESL at the middle school, high school, vocational institute, and college levels in San Juan, Puerto Rico, for 20 years. Her interests are cultural influences on second language acquisition and pronunciation techniques.

Jim Cracraft, Language Teaching Specialist. Jim has an M.S. degree in language education from Indiana University and spent six years as an English teacher in Taiwan, where he also did teacher training and editing. Jim loves to travel and has traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe.

Michael Jumonville, Language Teaching Specialist. He attended the University of Notre Dame, l'Universite Catholique de l'Ouest (France), Webster College (B.A. French), and Tennessee State University (M.Ed). He lived for 23 years in France, where he taught English, headed the language department of a training school, worked in sales and management for Xerox and Hertz, and ran his own bed and breakfast. He is also a musician, playing organ and piano in two churches.

Linda Roth, Language Teaching Specialist, M.S. (Curriculum and Instruction), M.A. (Teaching English as a Second Language). Linda has taught conversational, academic, and professional English to students from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Her interests include application of Multiple Intelligences theory to language teaching, materials development, and course design. Her hobbies are landscaping and gardening.

Irene Race has been the secretary at the English Language Center since 1998. Prior to coming to the ELC, she worked at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center for several years. Irene attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where she majored in art and political science. She also attended the University of Mexico in Mexico City, D.F., where she studied art and music. In her free time she enjoys the company of her six grandchildren.
