Related Programs The Departments of History and Economics collaborate in offering an interdisciplinary major in economic history. The economics minor offers a good introduction to economic issues. The back cover of this brochure summarizes requirements for the majors and minor offered by the Department of Economics. Major in Economics and History (45 hours)
Note: Calculus is a prerequisite for ECON 150, 231, and 232, which are required for the joint major. Here is a list of the course work for the joint major: Economic History Core (9 hours) three of the following courses, one of which must be an economics course numbered above 250: HIST 181 Economic History of Medieval and Early Modern Europe, ECON 226 (HIST 290), 244 (HIST 252), 245 (HIST 291), 266 (HIST 292), 271 (HIST 229). Note: ECON 231 is a prerequisite for ECON 266 and 271. Economics (18 hours) ECON 100, 101, 150 (or alternatives accepted in the economics major), 231, 232 plus one economics course numbered above 250 not included in the economic history core. History (18 hours) two of the following: 100, 101, 154, 155, 157, 160, 161, 170, 171 plus HIST 295 Undergraduate Seminar in History and three electives numbered above 171 not included in the economic history core. Honors Program in Economics and History (54 hours) Honors students will take the program described above with the following modification. Students take the 4-course honors sequence, HIST 297, 298a-b, 299; they will not be required to take HIST 295, though they may enroll for 295 as an elective. They will write an interdisciplinary thesis under the direction of an adviser from each department.
Economics Minor (21 hours)
The minor in economics has a prerequisite of one semester
of calculus but the Department recommends two semesters. Calculus is
prerequisite to Econ 150 economics statistics and Econ 231 intermediate
microeconomics. The minor requires 21 credit hours in economics: Econ
100, 101, 150, and 231 are the required core. Nine hours of electives
are necessary, at least three of which must be in Econ courses numbered
250 or above |
