This year the council of Economics Graduate Students (CEGS) has elected to use $1,500 of its budget to support the research expenses of its members. Recently there was a call for proposals for this program. These submissions were evaluated, and these are the results of the competition:
Robert Hammond has been awarded a research fund of $800, to defray expenses associated with his project entitled “An Experimental Investigation of Pricing in Auction and Posted-Price Markets”. Tamara Trafton has been awarded $700 for her project entitled “What are the Effects of Allowing Choice in Charitable Giving?” Congratulations to both of our winners.

Graduate Students on the Job Market: Congratulations to graduate students Tomas Cvrcek, who has accepted a Tenure-track assistant professor position at Clemson University and Jong Hun Kim, who accepted a Tenure-track, assistant professor position at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The winner of the "Rendigs Fels Award for Graduate Excellence" for the academic year of 2006-07 is Ali-Sina Onder. The award is presented annually by Emeritus Professor Rendig Fels, at a banquet held by the Economics Department with the staff, faculty, graduate students and teaching assistants all in attendance. Rosa Ferrer is the recipient of the Household International Best Research Paper Award in AY 2006-2007. This award carries a monetary prize of $250 and an engraving on a plaque to be placed in the Economics lounge. Congratulations, Rosa. Keep up the good work.

Robert Hammond, Valeska Groenert, and Demet Ulker are the recipients of the 2007 Summer Research Awards from the College of Arts and Sciences. Congratulations to Robert, Valeska, and Demet! Have a productive summer!”

Rosa Ferrer is the recipient of the Kirk Dornbush Research Assistantships for the 2007-2008 academic year. The award is funded through a generous endowment contributed by Mr. Kirk Dornbush, a Vanderbilt Alum and former U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands.

Osayi Ovbiosa-Akinbosoye, Katharine Livingston and Suman Seth are this year's winner of the Kirk Dornbush Summer Research Grant.

Grant and Fellowship Application Deadlines

Spring 2007 Competition for Dissertation Enhancement Grants The Graduate School is having its fall competition for these grants. To apply you should submit your application to the Director of Graduate Studies by the deadline, Friday, February 16, 2007, 4:00 p.m. If you have passed or will have passed your thesis proposal (the Ph.D. qualifying examination) by the deadline, you are eligible for consideration for the grants. Travel Grant sponsored by Graduate Student Council: $2,000 to be given away; split by semester: Eight $250 grants, keep it to 4 per semester. Brookings Institution Research Fellowships in Economic Studies, Foreign Policy Studies, or Governmental Studies: $20,500; 1 year; candidates are nominated by a graduate department. National Science Foundation Grants for Improving Doctoral Dissertation Research: in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences and in the Directorate for Biological Sciences; Ph.D. students enrolled at institutions; up to 24 months; open, allow up to 6 months for normal processing. Target deadlines for fellowships are August 15, 2005 and January 15, 2006 and must be submitted through Vanderbilt's Office of Sponsored Research. www.nsf.gov

Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowships for Research Related to Education. No citizenship requirement, but doctorate must be sought at a university; $20,000 over a period of one-two years; deadline is October 27. www.spencer.org
