The Divinity School students represent many different theological perspectives and come from thirty different religious traditions. Students historically under-represented in theological education --- women, racial and ethnic minority students, as well as students from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe --- are well represented at Vanderbilt. More than half of the students are women and approximately twenty percent are racial and ethnic minority students. Total enrollment in the Divinity School is approximately 175; in the Graduate Department of Religion enrollment is approximately 100. Over the past several years the average age of entering students in the M.Div./M.T.S. degree programs has varied from 26 to 32 years of age. Many of our students are recent college graduates; others chose ministry as a second career. |
In addition to parish ministry, non-traditional ministries --- such as chaplaincies, religious media and journalism, work within community social agencies, justice and peace activism, and college and university administration and teaching --- are professional goals of women and men studying here. The Vanderbilt curriculum and field education program define ministry broadly and thus fully support preparation for ministry both within and beyond a congregational setting.
