Our History

Photo: Benton Chapel Spire Vanderbilt Divinity School is the only interdenominational university-based theological school in the South and one of only four in the entire country. The School began as the Biblical Department of Vanderbilt University, which was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1873. The University’s relations with the denomination became strained over issues of church affiliation and control, however, and official ties with the Methodist Church were severed in 1914.

For more than 125 years, Vanderbilt Divinity School has nurtured an enthusiastic exchange of theological viewpoints and a deep commitment to ecumenical dialogue. Vanderbilt holds fast to its belief that religious institutions and society are best served by ministers and teachers trained in a rigorous academic environment of openness, diversity, and tolerance.
