Marie was born and raised in North Carolina and graduated from Meredith College. She has served churches in North Carolina, Illinois, and Belgium as a youth minister. Marie was the Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and she was the Registrar at the Mekane Yesus Theological Seminary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she also served on the faculty. She came to Vanderbilt in 2005 from a position as a church administrator in Franklin, Tennessee, where she has lived since 2000 with her husband, Mark, and their two children, Atticus and Claire. Marie and her family are members of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she is very active. She spends much of her free time doing volunteer work with the Williamson County Democratic Party, for which she is the President of the Williamson County Democratic Women and a member of the WCDP Executive Committee.

Marie serves as the Administrative Assistant in the Graduate Department of Religion, a position that puts her in frequent contact with prospective students, current students, faculty and other University staff members.  She is often introduced to new students as "the goddess of the GDR," a title she has decided that she likes.
