Numerous grants and awards. Ethnomusicology editor, New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Member, Society for Ethnomuiscology, American Musicological Society, African Studies Association, American Anthropology Association. Taught classes at University of Chicago, 1990/91; Brown University, 1993. Member of faculty: University of Dar Es Salaam Tanzania (East Africa), 1993/94; University of Alberta (Edmonton), 1996/97; Ohio State University, 1997/98. Vanderbilt since 1998.
