Celebrating Vanderbilt and Nashville women during Women’s History Month
The Office of Women’s Concern hosted the second annual celebration of women, “Making History,” at the end of March. The night brought together our community to recognize the lives of eight women making a difference on campus, in Nashville, and beyond.
The Office of Women's Concerns hosted the second annual celebration of women event, “Making History,” on March 31. In honor of Women's History Month, student organizations (including Economic Empowerment Coalition, GABLE, Mosaic and Marginalia from the Divinity School as well as the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center) nominated women from the Vanderbilt and larger Nashville communities whose everyday labor embodies justice and equality. Each honoree's hard work demonstrates excellence in a field related to the work and particular concerns of each organization.
The Economic Empowerment Coalition honored Melissa Snarr, assistant professor of ethics and society, for her dedication to education and activism, and Jackie Lucas for her enthusiastic work in the Vanderbilt union. GABLE honored the Rev. Judi Hoffman of Edgehill United Methodist Church for her work for LGBTQI inclusion in the Methodist church. Mosaic honored Doris Kosmin of West End Synagogue for her interfaith work and Kim Johnson of Scarritt-Bennett Center for her diversity work in racism, women's empowerment and interfaith circles. Marginalia honored Brynn White for her pioneering dedication to Nashville's homeless communities, including their pets. The Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center honored Sandy Stahl, associate dean of the Office of the Dean of Students, for her lifelong commitment to women flourishing at the university. The Office of Women's Concerns honored Miriam Leibowitz of Community Food Advocates for her work in Nashville's food deserts and in appreciation for her relational style of community organizing. Like last year's event, this year's celebration created a space for diverse and dynamic women and men to meet, greet, and collaborate. Sometimes, we just need to pause to celebrate one another.
