1:00 PM
"The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus"
Sarratt Cinema

Given by Amy-Jill Levine, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, Vanderbilt Divinity School, Graduate Department of Religion, Department of Religious Studies. Jesus of Nazareth followed the Torah of Moses, found inspiration in the Prophets of Israel, and offered a teaching that some Jews found compelling. Yet too often Christians and Jews today incorrectly regard Jesus as rejecting his Judaism, and incorrectly regard Judaism as legalistic, misogynistic, vengeful, and xenophobic. Understanding Jesus in his Jewish context brings new meaning to his parables, his politics, and his piety, and it offers as well a new path for Jewish-Christian relations. This event is sponsored by the Class of 1967.

2:15 PM
"Religion and Politics in the 2008 Election Cycle"
All Faith Chapel

Given by James Hudnut-Beumler, Dean of the Divinity School and Anne Potter Wilson Distinguished Professor of American Religious History. With two years left in George Bush’s presidency, the 2008 presidential election cycle began at an unprecedented date with a field of nearly 20 candidates from the two major parties. Nearly all candidates are working hard to portray themselves as religious. In the 2000 and 2004 federal elections there was much talk about how the Republican party owned the evangelical vote and religious observant voters more generally. In the 2006 congressional elections those trends did not seem nearly so clear. This session will take an advance look at how religion is likely to factor in the elections of 2008, both in terms of issues and candidates.
