How to Upload Files to the Student Organizations Web Server (Windows):: See separate instructions for Macintosh users Vanderbilt provides registered student organizations with webspace at no charge on Vanderbilt's web server, studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu. To upload webfiles to studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu, ITS provides the free SSH Secure Shell for Windows Client. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to use SSH Secure Shell. 1. Download the free SSH Secure Shell client. You will need your VUnetID and e-password. Download SSH Secure Shell.
![]() 2. After the download is complete, you will have two icons on your desktop. (See illustration at right.) Doubleclick on the icon titled SSH Secure File Transfer Client.
3. You will see a dialog box like the one below. Select File > Connect. ![]()
4. The next dialog box will have a place to enter in the Host Name, User Name, Port Number, and Authentication Method. The Host Name is studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu and the User Name is your VUnetID. Keep the Port Number set on 22. For the Authentication Method choose Password (see illustration below). Once you've entered this information, click on the Connect button. ![]()
5. The first time you connect to the server, you may see a dialog box asking if you want to accept the host key (see screenshot below). Click Yes to save the new host key to the local database. ![]()
6. It may take a few seconds, but then you will be prompted to enter your e-password (see illustration below). ![]()
7. The next dialog box will have 2 panes. The left pane lists files on your computer. The right pane lists files on your folder on the studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu server. If your group has never had a website before, your folder on studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu won't have anything in it, and you'll see a blank area in the right pane of the dialog box (like the illustration below). If your group has had a website on studentorgs.vanderbilt.edu, you will see html and image files in the right pane of the dialog box. ![]()
8. The left pane of the dialog box (titled Local Name) contains files and folders on your computer. Navigate through your computer until you get to the folder with your web files. You want your web files to be visible in the left pane (see illustration below). Once your web files are visible in the left pane, select the files you want to put on the server, and drag them into the right pane of the dialog box (the pane titled Remote Name). ![]()
9. Once you've dragged the files into the right pane of the dialog box, your web files will be on the server. (See illustration below.) ![]()
10. Once you've uploaded all your files, select File > Disconnect (see illustration below).
11. You will then get a dialog box asking if you want to disconnect. Click OK. ![]()
13. Then select File > Exit. ![]()
14. Congratulations! You've successfully uploaded your web files to the Student Organizations server.
15. View your files in your web browser to check that all your information transferred successfully. If you get an error message that there is a permissions problem, check the permissions settings within the SSH Secure Shell application. Here's how to check the permission settings:
