Barrett Thomas Harris
When Barrett Thomas Harris was only 3 and one-half months old, she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Her pediatrician was astounded that her white blood count was over a million, causing her blood to be the consistency of paste. She immediately traveled by life flight to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt where her parents were told that Barrett′s chance of surviving the night were slim.
Following her emergency admittance to the hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children′s Hospital became the Harris′ second home for the next six months. Due to her paste-like blood consistency, Barrett experienced several strokes during her stay which delayed her complete healing. Thanks to many prayers and the life saving skills of Children′s Hospital doctors, Barrett survived those months of treatment. Not only has Barrett′s life changed, but many other children with similar prognosis have been saved because of what doctors learned during her treatment. Barrett is now a beautiful, happy, energetic little girl who enjoys laughing and playing with her family. The Harris Family is grateful to have this second chance at life with Barrett, and they want everyone to know how valuable it is to have the caliber of care Children′s Hospital offers to the Middle Tennessee Community.
